You Are Not Alone
When the People You Love Most Are the Hardest to Reach
Most families who come to Brighter Sky Counseling aren't in crisis - they're just stuck. Stuck in the same arguments. Stuck in silence after something painful happened. Stuck watching distance grow between people who genuinely love each other and don't know how to close it.
Family therapy isn't about deciding who's right. It's about creating a space where everyone in the room feels heard - and where real change becomes possible. Our therapists help families rebuild trust, improve communication, and move through difficult transitions together.
Whether you're navigating conflict, a major life change, a struggling child or teen, or wounds that have been building for years - there's a therapist here who can help your family find its way back to each other.
Common Reasons Families Seek Therapy
What We Help With
Communication Breakdown
When talking turns into fighting, or no one talks at all. We help families find new ways to say the hard things - and actually hear each other.
Parent-Child Conflict
Defiance, disconnection, struggles with teens - therapy gives parents and kids a neutral space to understand each other and reset the relationship.
Life Transitions
Divorce, remarriage, a new baby, a move, a loss - major changes shake families. We help everyone adjust and find stability together.
Grief & Loss
Families grieve differently, and that difference can create painful distance. Therapy helps each person's experience be honored while healing together.
Blended Family Stress
Navigating step-parents, step-siblings, and two households is genuinely hard. We help blended families build trust and find their new normal.
Supporting a Struggling Child
When a child or teen is dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, or behavioral challenges, the whole family is affected. We help families understand and support each other.
The Therapy Experience
What to Expect
Reach Out & Get Started
Contact us by phone or through our website. Our front desk team will ask a few questions about your family's situation and match you with the right therapist. We currently have no waitlist for most insurance plans, so you can often be seen within days. You may be greeted by one of our therapy dogs - a gentle welcome for families of all ages.
The First Session
The first session is about understanding your family's story. Your therapist will meet with family members together (and sometimes individually, depending on the situation) to get a full picture of what's happening and what everyone hopes to change. There's no pressure to have it all figured out - just come as you are.
Building a Plan Together
After the first session, your therapist will work with your family to set shared goals and a plan for getting there. Family therapy is collaborative - your therapist helps facilitate honest conversation and guides the process, but the direction comes from you. Everyone in the family has a voice.
Ongoing Sessions
Most families meet weekly or every two weeks, typically for 50-minute sessions. Some families attend together every time; others alternate between joint and individual sessions based on what's most helpful. Your therapist will adapt the format to what works best for your family.
In-Person or Telehealth
We see families at our West End Billings office - easy parking, a comfortable waiting area, and a welcoming space for all ages. Telehealth is also available throughout Montana for families who can't make it in or prefer to start from home. The quality of care is the same either way.
How We Work
Our Approach to Family Therapy
Family therapy isn't about pointing fingers. It's about helping everyone in the room feel heard, understood, and empowered to do things differently. Our therapists are trained in evidence-based family therapy approaches and tailor their work to the unique dynamics of your family.
Systems-Based
We look at the family as a whole, not just individual behaviors. Patterns, roles, and dynamics are explored so real change is possible at the root level.
Everyone Has a Voice
Your therapist is a skilled facilitator, not a referee. Every family member's perspective matters - and therapy works best when everyone feels safe enough to share it.
Strengths-Focused
We start with what your family does well and build from there. Most families in therapy love each other deeply - therapy helps that love find better expression.
Common Questions
FAQ
Do you accept my insurance?
We accept most major insurance plans including Blue Cross Blue Shield, Aetna, and others. We also accept Medicaid and Medicare, though there may be a waitlist for those plans. Contact our front desk and we'll confirm whether we are in-network with your plan. You can also visit our rates and insurance page for more information.
Who needs to come to family therapy sessions?
That depends on your situation. Sometimes the whole family attends together; other times it makes sense to start with parents only, or to bring in different combinations of family members over time. Your therapist will work with you to figure out the best structure. You don't have to have everyone on board before you reach out.
What if one family member doesn't want to come?
This is very common. Family therapy can still be incredibly effective even if not everyone is willing to participate right away - and sometimes one or two family members making changes shifts the whole dynamic. We'll work with whoever is ready, and your therapist can advise on how to approach reluctant family members.
Is family therapy different from individual therapy?
Yes. Individual therapy focuses on one person's inner experience and growth. Family therapy focuses on the relationships between people - the patterns, communication styles, and dynamics that shape how a family functions. Many families benefit from a combination of both.
How long does family therapy take?
It varies. Some families resolve a specific issue in 8-12 sessions. Others work with a therapist for longer as new challenges arise or they want to continue growing. There's no set timeline - you stay as long as it's helpful.
Can we do family therapy via telehealth?
Absolutely. All of our family therapists offer secure video sessions available to anyone in Montana. Telehealth can actually make family sessions easier to coordinate when schedules are busy. The quality of care is the same whether you're in our office or connecting from home.
